Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Thecadinium is Thecadinium petasatum Kofoid & Skogsberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Carinadinium ovatum (S.Yoshimatsu, S.Toriumi & J.D.Dodge) Hoppenrath, Selina & Yamaguchi.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), ovate (Stearn 1973).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Cells bilaterally flattened, oval in lateral view, 40-50 µm long, 33-40 µm deep. Hypotheca three times longer than epitheca. Cingulum left-handed spiral, displaced about two times its width without an overhang. Hypotheca with two or three strong spines at antapex. Nucleus situated dorsally in central part of the hypotheca. Plate formula: 3', 6", 6c, 5s?, 5"', 1"". Chloroplasts absent.
